Independent Cafe, Morecambe

Commissioned by Morecambe Town Council to design a new cafe concession for the promenade serving walkers and holidaymakers, Arca proposed a striking asymmetric object. In doing so, the practice continued the tradition of landmark structures animating the seafront. The twisted geometry of the cafe was determined by the flood levels on the promenade, universal access requirements, and by the need to provide a degree of sun shading for the open elevations. The building became an instant landmark, clad in robust stainless steel, with glazing framing views from town to the beautiful sweep of Morecambe Bay. The project will shortly be joined by another landmark project - Eden.
